Cancerbero is an Open Source, Nmap-based scan engine for large networks. We have improved this tool for integration in our product and service offerings and are releasing the new version back to the community.

1. What Is Cancerbero ?

Cancerbero is a network port-scanning software based on Nmap, written by Victor Barahona and Carlos Ramirez at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. It most notably features:

  • Configurable scanning of the defined networks
  • Distributed network sensor architecture
  • Web-based reporting of the gathered information, with history
  • Monitoring of the managed networks and hosts for changes

2. Straton IT's Contribution

The released 0.6 version (2007) was only partially filling our needs for the purposes of our commercial product and services offerings. We have thus rewritten the network sensor component to meet these goals:

  • Massive performance enhancements through parallel scanning of the networks
  • Collection of much more information about the targets
  • Easier to extend and maintain, using an object-oriented design
  • Extra robustness thanks to "modern Perl" techniques
  • Presumably fewer bugs, as the Cancerbero sensor now has a comprehensive test suite

3. Availability

Our version 0.7 will eventually be integrated in Cancerbero's main branch when Victor Barahona and Carlos Ramirez' schedule allow it. In the meantime, we are publishing it here with their agreement, for the benefit of the community:
